The other night I was having a really hard time falling asleep, because I read long past the time I should and then I can never fall asleep afterwards. I finally got sick of lying in bed and got up to get a drink of water. As I stood at the sink, I looked out the bathroom window onto the street. It was 3 in the morning and no one was out. All I could see was the dim glow of the street light and millions of small snowflakes falling from the sky. I sat there memorized the beauty that was right outside my door. Everything was coated in a thick layer of snow and there was absolutely no movement except for the snow fall. The moon was clouded over but still visible in the navy blue sky. I sat there feeling so peaceful to be able watch what nature does when we are asleep. Here’s this street that I grew up on for my whole life, thinking I knew every nook and cranny it had, taking my breath away because of some snow? I thought maybe I was just over tired, and technically I was, but watching nature work before we wake up and disturb it, is really an amazing experience. This reminded me of how beautiful our world is and often times we don’t slow down enough to see it. In the morning people woke up grumbling because of the snow they would have to shovel or plow, and the salt they would have to put down so they wouldn't slip. I did not hear anyone wake up and say, “Wow that is beautiful.” I guess what I am trying to say is as humans it is almost our second nature to look at something through the spectrum of “what’s wrong with it” but I dare you to wake up at 3in the morning and watch the world around seeking out what’s good about it, you won’t be disappointed.

Late at night when you're overtired is the best time to get instant inspiration. Honestly, I was up till 3 by myself once and had a series of epiphanies!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you about the snow. It is absolutely breathtaking, and I'm kicking myself for taking so long to notice. I grew up in California, so when I moved to such a snowy place I grumbled for about 7 years before I was able to appreciate the winter. Now I don't even mind the cold! I just love winter and the unique beauty it gives us. We really need to take the time to stop and look around and say "Wow".
Haha yeah, I am a night owl so that's just how it works out! California weather is a lot different than Canadian winters I would assume. It can be very refreshing to just appreciate something.
DeleteI agree, everyone is always rushing around and almost no one stops or at least slows down to just admire everything around them. There is many things to admire in this world even things we see every day that deserve to be admired. Only recently I took the time to take a deep long look at my elderly cats fur pattern and I was amazed at the beauty and design on every piece of hair that equalled her entire pelt, so you know she is a tortishell with white tabby who has what cat experts call a ticked pelt. I now see her pelt as more than just her fur, it is a masterpiece that she wears with pride. It was something I had never really looked at before but when I really saw her fur it took my breath away. About the snow, personally I hate winter but I am always awed to see a fresh blanket covering the world and coating the branches of trees. If you like that kind of awe you should visit the Muskoka region up north and watch the sun setting on a clear summer evening on a lake in the woods. It is truly something to marvel at.

DeleteI actually go up to that region every summer, and have been lucky enough to see my fair share of the sunsets, your right though, absolutly amazing. I get what you are saying about your cat, sometimes things become so normal to us, or even habitual that we forget to appreciate them, or see the beauty in them.
